INTRODUCTION
633 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS), formerly Volunteer Gliding School, has been based at RAF Cosford since its formation in 1948. During this time it has had five Commanding Officers and seen four different types of aircraft in service. The school currently has four Grob 109B Vigilant T.Mk.1 motor-gliders that are used to train cadets from the Air Training Corps (ATC) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF), and for staff training.
Air
Cadet Training
On the ATC side, the school undertakes
Gliding Induction Courses (GIC), Gliding Scholarships (GS) and Advanced Glider
Training (AGT) for Air Cadets. A select few of these cadets continue on to train
as G2, G1 or even C Category instructors. More information on this can be found
in the Tasking section.
CCF
Cadet Training
The Squadron also undertakes GIC and GS training for CCF cadets. The Gliding Scholarships are usually carried out during residential week-long courses, which take place three times a year. CCF cadets from all over the UK attend these courses, and many fly solo, or fly a 'ghost solo' (with an instructor present in the aircraft who only observes), towards the end of the week.
Staff
Continuation Training
Staff continuation training is in 2
different forms.
1.
SCT U/T (Training for instructors up
to C category).
2.
SCT (for instructors above C
category).
