Sponsored Radio Comms Exercise 'Messagathon'
Following a suggestion from one of 425's cadets, Exercise Messagathon was organised to raise money for UNICEF in connection with the Tsunami and African children appeals.

'Messagathon' grew to become a national 24-hour sponsored radio operating exercise involving cadet radio stations from the Air Training Corps, the Sea Cadet Corps and the Combined Cadet Force.
A photo of some of our radio section cadets at work during the exercise is above.
A value of £1000 was raised for UNICEF, including donations received from other squadrons, the SCC and CCF/ACF, and from the RAFA.

Well done to all who took part, and a big thank you to all who supported us on the radio nets, sponsored cadets and donated money to the appeal.

Day Visit to RAF Shawbury
8 of 425's cadets took a day off school to visit RAF Shawbury, an active joint-services flying training station, during November.
They visited the radar and visual control rooms in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility, where the staff explained how aircraft are controlled on and off the airfield.
They also visited aircraft storage hangars, where the staff explained the processes involved in preparing aircraft for storage, putting stored aircraft back into service and the removal of spare parts.

'You keep watch. I'll look to see if the ignition key is still in...'
One of the highlights was a visit to the Apache servicing facility, where modifications to and servicing of the Apache helicopter take place. Cadets were able to inspect the Apache 'glass' cockpit first-hand....

After lunch in the Junior Ranks Mess, all cadets were treated to an air experience flight in a Griffin, courtesy of 60 Sqn RAF.

Verdict ? A fantastic day out...
425 Sqn ATC would like to extend thanks to the staff at RAF Shawbury for making this a memorable, educational and rewarding day for our cadets.
