Cadets Assist at the 2003 Wales and West Regional Field Day

425's cadets, assisted by cadets from 481 and 2156 sqns, provided a radio comms net for the staff running the recent Wales and West Regional Field Day at RAF Cosford.

At the same time an HF (long-distance) radio station was set up allowing cadets from competing squadrons around the W&W Region to pass messages to other squadrons around the UK.

Charity Railway Weekend
At the end of September cadets from 425 assisted with the smooth running of a local charity fund-raising event, helping to boost the funds of three local charities, including 425's.

Cadet Corporal Swift is Awarded his Wings

Cadet Corporal Swift has been awarded his gliding wings for successfully completing a Gliding Scholarship course and flying solo. He is now training as a staff cadet at a local ATC VGS.

Pelsall Carnival Fund-Raising and Recruitment Day
Some of the ATC fund-raising and information stands being set up by the civilian committee, staff and cadets at the 2003 Pelsall Carnival. A successfull day was had by all !

Cadets Take Part in the MVT Show at Kemble
At the end of June some of 425's cadets took part in a 'Living History' display at the 2003 Military Vehicle Trust show at Kemble airfield in Wiltshire, demonstrating radio communications from an ex-Royal Marines fitted-for-radio (FFR) Land Rover.

And here they are out of hiding....

Cadets Assist at Rosie's Walk 2003
In May 2003, 425 Sqn cadets assisted the organisers of Rosie's Walk with route marshalling and control.

Above is 425's marshalling team with the OC and Adj, plus two cadets from 481 sqn who helped us out on the day. Thanks !

Rosie's mum and dad, Sean and Karen, with Shefali (BBC weather girl), Carol, and 2/3 of our radio controllers (the other 1/3 is still hard at work on the radio net behind...).
The walk was to raise funds for the 'Helping Hands Appeal'
Rosie was a cadet with 425 sqn, she died tragically in May 2001.

Greenacres Flying Club visit 425

425 Sqn played host recently to two members of the local r/c model flying club who gave us an excellent talk on building and flying model aircraft, and brought some models along for the cadets to see. One amazing flying machine they demonstrated was a feather-weight rubber-powered model which is designed to fly indoors !
Seen above are some of 425's cadets about to liberate a few ready-made models.....

Two cadets from 425 Sqn represented Staffs Wing in the Regional 5-a-side competition - and helped the Staffs team win !
Even though they're both Villa supporters.

425 on the Road...
Thanks to the efforts of many of 425's cadets at fund-raising, the squadron has been able to buy ( and insure...! ) a minibus. This will enable cadets to get out and about at the weekends more - on visits to theme parks, museums, walks, airfields etc.
It's a bit like the one below, only in blue.

Ex-Cadet Sergeant Hughes Receives his Gold D of E Award

Ex-cadet sergeant (now CI) Ian Hughes travelled to St James' Palace in London during November 2002 for the presentation of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, achieved over a period of 5 years during his time with 425 squadron ATC.

AWO Cox Retires From Uniformed Service

AWO Ken Cox retired from uniformed service on the last day of September 2002. He first joined 425 in 1958, and has been with the squadron ever since. He will be continuing his connection with 425 as a CI, assisting with the flight simulator build amongst other things.

425 heads for the hills...

...to compete in the 2002 ATC HF / VHF / UHF Radio Field Day

425's Radio Section took to the hills to take part in the annual HF / VHF / UHF Radio Field Day competition during September 2002. We operated as MRB25M1 from the Long Mynd in Shropshire on most HF channels, V3, V4 and U1. The results will be announced soon !
